How to reconnect with Xero

Learn how to reconnect or refresh your Xero integration in Dext if your connection expires or login details change. Includes steps to refresh your chart of accounts.

Updated over 2 weeks ago

If your Xero connection breaks, you’ll need to reconnect your account to restore the link between Dext and your accounting software.

This can happen if your login credentials have changed or your connection has expired. Reconnecting re-establishes the secure link and lets Dext continue publishing data to Xero.

Important:

  • You must have an Admin role in Dext to connect or reconnect an accounting software integration.

  • If you don’t have this access, contact your account administrator or accountant/bookkeeper to request it.

When to reconnect

You’ll need to reconnect your Xero integration if:

  • Your Xero login details have changed

  • The connection token has expired

  • Dext displays a publishing or sync error related to Xero

If you only want to refresh your chart of accounts (lists), see how to refresh your Xero lists.

How to reconnect your Xero account

Follow these steps to reconnect your Dext account with Xero:

  1. Go to Business settings in the sidebar, then select Connections.

  2. Under Accounting software, click Manage next to Xero.

  3. From the drop-down menu, select Reconnect.

4. Click Connect software - you’ll be redirected to the Xero login page.

5. Log in to your Xero account.

6. Click Allow access or Continue with [x] organisations, depending on the

prompt.

7. Once redirected back to Dext, select the relevant organisation you want to

connect to and click Next.

8. When you see the confirmation message that your organisation is connected,

click Finish.

Note: If you reconnected because of a publishing error, you’ll need to try publishing your document again, even if the error message still appears.

How to refresh lists

Refreshing your Xero integration does not reconnect the account - it simply updates your lists (such as your chart of accounts, suppliers, or tax rates) from Xero.

Refreshing your lists:

  • Keeps your data synced without disconnecting.

  • Does not affect any existing data or published items.

To update your lists, follow the steps in our dedicated guide on how to refresh integration data in Dext.

Troubleshooting tip

If the issue persists after reconnecting:

  • Check that your Xero login credentials are correct.

  • Ensure you’re logged in to the correct organisation in Xero.

  • If the problem continues, try refreshing the connection again or contact the Dext support team for assistance.
