How to upload bank statements in Dext

Upload bank statements to Dext for automatic transaction extraction. Covers file requirements, processing times, and statement management.

Written by Alexander

Once you've added a bank account in Dext, you can start uploading bank statements. Transactions are extracted automatically — no manual data entry needed. Both bank and credit card statements are supported.

Before you start

  • Only Admin users can upload bank statements. For a full breakdown of user roles, go to Roles and permissions.

  • You'll need a bank account set up in Dext before you can upload statements. If you haven't done this yet, go to How to add a bank account in Dext.

  • Bank Statement Extraction has usage limits depending on your plan, and additional charges may apply if you exceed your limit. Practice Admins can check usage at Practice settings > Subscription; Business Admins at Business settings > Subscription.

  • Once a statement is extracted, it counts toward your usage limit — even if you delete it later.

Upload a bank statement

To upload a bank statement in Dext, use the Add Documents button and select the bank account that matches your statement.

  1. Select Add Documents in the top left of your screen.

  2. Switch to the Bank tab.

  3. Choose the bank account that matches the statement you're uploading.

  4. Select the file from your computer, or drag and drop it onto the upload area.

Once uploaded, your statement will appear in Bank > Statements > Collected while it's being processed. After extraction is complete, it moves to the Processed tab.

Note: Bank statements don't appear in the account's Submission history.

To automatically detect gaps between uploaded statements, go to How to detect missing bank data in Dext.

If your statement shows a Rejected status in the Collected tab, go to Why was my bank statement rejected in Dext?.

File requirements

Your file must meet the following requirements before uploading:

  • One statement per file, covering a single bank account

  • 50MB or less

  • 300 pages or less

  • Minimum 200dpi resolution for scanned documents

  • PDF or TIFF format only

Processing times

Processing time depends on the type of PDF. Digital (native) PDFs from online banking are typically processed in minutes. Scanned documents can take up to 24 hours, though around 75% of all statements are extracted within 4 hours.

Manage uploaded statements

After extraction is complete, statements are available in Bank > Statements > Processed. From here you can reassign, reprocess, or export them.

Move a statement to another account

If you uploaded a statement to the wrong bank account, you can reassign it from the Processed tab.

  1. Go to Bank > Statements > Processed.

  2. Tick the checkbox next to the statement, then select Assign bank account.

  3. Choose the correct bank account, then select Assign.

The statement will now appear under the correct account.

Report an extraction error

If extracted data looks incorrect — for example, transactions are missing descriptions — you can resubmit the statement for reprocessing.

  1. Go to Bank > Statements > Processed.

  2. Tick the checkbox next to the affected statement.

  3. Open the Tools menu and select Report mistake.

Note: Reprocessing via Report mistake is free of charge.

Export statements

You can download both the extracted transaction data and the original uploaded file from Bank > Statements > Processed:

  • Select Export on the right to download all transactions as a CSV.

  • Select the Download icon next to a statement to download the original PDF.

To view and work with the extracted transactions, go to How to view and export bank transactions in Dext.

Note: Bank statements can't be published directly to accounting software from Dext. Export the CSV and upload it to your accounting software manually.
