Roles and permissions in Dext

Find out which roles Dext has, how practice and business roles differ, and where to change a user's role or the account owner.

Your role decides what you can see and do in a Dext account. Practices and business accounts have different roles, so how you change a role depends on which account you're in. Use this article to find the right guide.

Note: Roles are set per account. If you belong to several Dext accounts, you can have a different role in each.

How do I change what someone can do in Dext?

It depends on the account. Pick the row that matches what you need:

How are practice and business roles different?

Dext has 2 sets of roles:

  • Practice roles are for accounting and bookkeeping practices: Practice Admin, Client Admin, and Standard User.

  • Business roles are for business accounts: Business Admin, User Admin, and Standard User.

Practice roles only apply inside the practice. In a client account, accountants and bookkeepers act as Admins, whatever their practice role.

Note: A business account can belong to a client of a practice, or to a business that pays for Dext itself.

What is an account owner?

Every Dext account, practice or business, has an account owner. It's usually the first user added.

Being the account owner is a label, not a role. The owner can have any role, even Standard User, and gets no extra rights from being the owner. Each account has 1 owner, and it isn't necessarily the person who pays for Dext.

  • You can't deactivate or remove the account owner.

  • In a client account, the practice can change the owner's role. Nobody else can.

  • Only our support team can change who the owner is. The new owner can be any user on the account, whatever their role.
