How to use the Health Score in Data Health & Insights

The Health Score in Data Health & Insights measures bookkeeping health as a percentage for each client. Customise which checks it uses and track changes over time.

The Health Score gives you an overview of a client's bookkeeping health, expressed as a percentage with a heart icon that changes colour based on the score. You can see it from the Clients list for any client with Data Health & Insights enabled and an active Xero or QuickBooks Online connection.

Selecting a Health Score percentage in the Clients list takes you directly to that client's overview page. If the Health Score hasn't been set up yet, select Set up to go to the client's connections page and connect them to Xero or QuickBooks Online.

Note: The Health Score is available to practices on Practice Essentials and Practice Advanced plans with the Data Health & Insights add-on.

Who can use the Health Score

The Health Score is available to all practice users with access to Data Health & Insights. To configure Health Score settings, including customising which checks are included, you need to be a Practice Admin.

How the Health Score works

The Health Score is calculated from a weighted set of Data Health checks and Insights. Each check contributes to the overall percentage according to its weight.

The score is relative to the selected date range and proportional to the size of the client.

The Health Score section on the client overview page lists all checks included in the score, the status of each, and the number of items flagged. The heart icon changes colour based on the score:

  • 71–100% — teal heart

  • 36–70% — amber heart

  • 0–35% — red heart

Default checks

By default, the Health Score uses 10 checks. Some of these are Data Health checks; others come from the Insights section of Data Health & Insights.

Note: The weighting of checks in the Health Score will be refined over time. Dismissed suggestions and archived accounts don't count as issues in the score — only unresolved items affect it.

Viewing the Health Score over time

Selecting the Health Score on the client overview page takes you to the Health Score Details page. This shows the current score, the score ranges, a donut chart of how the score is weighted across checks, and a graph of how the score has changed over time.

To adjust what the graph shows, use the Period dropdown and the View by Day / Week controls at the top of the chart.

Note: Health Score data is only available from the date the client was imported into Dext, or from September 2021, whichever is more recent.

To switch to table view, select View as table. Select View as table again to export the data. Select Graph view to return to the graph.

Health Score settings

Health Score settings let you see how the default score is weighted and customise it for your whole practice.

You can access Health Score settings and customisation from two places:

  • From a client's Overview page, select the Health score to open the Health Score Details page, then select Customise Health Score — either in the top right of the page or in the Customise Health Score for all clients section at the bottom.

  • From Practice settings, select Data Health in the left navigation, then select Health score, then select Customise Health Score.

Important: Only Practice Admins can access Health Score settings. Any customisation you make applies to all clients in your practice.

Customising the Health Score

You can customise the Health Score by choosing which checks are included and setting the weighting for each. Refer to the Available checks section below for the full list.

To create a custom Health Score:

  1. Select Customise Health Score.

  2. In the Set up step, select + Add next to each check you want to include in the Selected checks list. Set a weighting for each check.

  3. Select Next.

  4. Review the summary and confirmation screen, then select Save custom Health Score.

Note: A custom Health Score must include between 5 and 12 checks. The combined weightings must add up to 100%. A higher weighting gives that check more influence over the overall score.
