How to spot phishing and fraud attempts

Learn how to spot phishing and fraud attempts. Find out how to recognise suspicious emails, report them safely, and protect your Dext account with strong passwords, 2FA, and secure practices.

Updated this week

Phishing and online fraud are common scams where attackers pretend to be a trusted company or person to steal sensitive information. These scams can appear through emails, text messages, or even phone calls.

This guide explains how to recognize phishing attempts, what to do if you receive a suspicious message, and key security practices to protect your account.

Common signs of phishing

Watch out for these red flags when reviewing messages that appear to come from Dext or any other service:

  • Unusual sender – Always check the sender’s email address or phone number. We only send messages from official domains like @dext.com or @notifications.app.dext.com.

  • Urgent or threatening language – Messages that pressure you to act immediately or warn of dire consequences are common phishing tactics.

  • Requests for personal information – We will never ask for passwords, bank details, or updates to payment information via email or text.

  • Suspicious links or attachments – Avoid clicking on unfamiliar links or downloading unexpected attachments.

  • Generic greetings – Phishing emails often start with “Dear Customer” instead of using your actual name.

  • Spelling and grammar errors – Poorly written messages are often a sign of fraudulent intent.

What to do if you suspect phishing

If something looks suspicious, follow these steps:

  1. Don’t respond or click anything – Do not reply, download attachments, or open any links.

  2. Verify communication – Contact Dext directly using the official channels listed on our website.

    • If you’re logged in, you can message our Support team through in-app chat or email support@dext.com.

  3. Report the incident – Forward the suspicious message to security@dext.com.

    • If you’ve already clicked a link or shared information, contact Support immediately.

  4. Monitor your accounts – Check your account activity and financial statements for unauthorized transactions. Report anything unusual right away.

Additional security tips

  • Use strong, unique passwords – Combine letters, numbers, and symbols, and avoid reusing passwords across sites.

  • Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) – Add an extra layer of protection. Dext supports Microsoft Azure AD SSO and Passkey authentication for secure logins.

  • Keep software updated – Regularly update your operating system, antivirus software, and browsers.

  • Check for data breaches – Visit Have I Been Pwned to see if your email or credentials have been exposed.

  • Stay informed – Visit our Trust Centre for verified updates on suspicious activity and security notices.
