You manage a client's users from the Users page in their account. You act as an Admin there, so you can change anyone's role, including the account owner's.
What access do I have in a client account?
You act as an Admin in any client account you can open, regardless of your practice role. Even as a Standard User in your practice, you can manage the client's users.
Your practice colleagues aren't client users. They reach clients through the practice, so they don't appear on the client's Users page, and you can't add them there. If you try, Dext shows a message that the user is part of your practice. To give a colleague access to a client, go to How to manage a colleague's access to clients
The client's own users have business roles: Business Admin, User Admin, and Standard User. To find out what each can do, go to What can each business role do in Dext?
How do I make a client user an admin or change their access?
Open the client account from your practice.
Go to Users in the sidebar.
Select Manage next to the user.
Choose Edit privileges.
Choose the role and permissions, then select Save.
Can I change the client account owner's role?
Yes. You can change the client owner's role like anyone else's, for example, from Standard User to Business Admin. The owner has (Owner) next to their name on the Users page.
They stay the account owner, regardless of the role you give them.
How do I change the client account owner?
Our support team makes this change. The new owner must be one of the client's own users. You and your colleagues can't be the owner of a client account.
If the new owner isn't a user yet, add them with login access first. For the steps, go to How to add a user to a client account
Then contact our support team with:
The client account's CRN, from Business settings > Business profile
The new owner's name and email address
Your confirmation that we can copy the former owner into the conversation, even if they've left the business
The new owner gets the Business Admin role. You can't remove the account owner, so you can only remove the former owner once we've made the change.
Tip: Changing the owner of several client accounts? Contact us once and list each account's CRN with the new owner for each.
How do I get a client to pay for their subscription if they aren't an admin?
Change their role to Business Admin first, then send the invite. This includes the account owner.
Only a Business Admin can receive the invite to pay for the client's subscription. If the account has no Business Admin, Dext asks you to set one up before you can send it. For the invite steps, go to How to remove, deactivate, or delete a client
If you want to pay for the client's subscription instead, the client must invite your practice first, and any subscription they pay for must have ended. You don't need a new account owner for this. Go to How to take over a client's Dext subscription
How do I add or remove users in a client account?
To add a user and choose their role, go to How to add a user to a client account
To remove or deactivate a user, go to How to remove or deactivate a user from a client account
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to add myself as a user in each client account?
No. You reach your clients through your practice, and you act as an Admin in every client account you can open. To choose which clients a colleague can open, go to How to manage a colleague's access to clients
My client added me as a user instead of as their accountant. What do I do?
Ask them to invite you from Business settings > Accountant instead. That links their account to your practice, so it shows in your client list. Adding you on their Users page only makes you a user in their account. For the steps your client follows, go to How to invite your accountant to access your Dext account
