What are two-factor authentication backup codes?

Backup codes are generated when you enable 2FA with an authenticator app. Use them to log in if you can't access your authenticator app.

When you set up two-factor authentication (2FA) using an authenticator app, you receive 12 one-time backup codes.

These codes let you log in if you lose access to your authenticator app. Store them somewhere secure as soon as you receive them.

How backup codes work

Backup codes are single-use recovery codes generated during authenticator app 2FA setup.

  • You receive 12 unique codes when you set up 2FA using an authenticator app.

  • Each code can be used only once.

  • After a code is used, it becomes invalid.

  • Store them securely — for example, in a password manager or secure document.

If you can't access your authenticator app, use a backup code to log in.

  2. Enter your email and password.

  3. On the verification screen, select Use a backup code.

  4. Enter one of your unused backup codes.

  5. Select Verify to log in.
