From 1 February 2027, Dext AI Assist moves from uncapped usage to licences with a set number of monthly credits. This article is for accountants and bookkeepers who use AI Assist for their clients, and covers the licence sizes, what uses credits, and how Dext works out each client's usage.
What changes on 1 February 2027
AI Assist pricing changes on 1 February 2027, when the launch offer ends. Until 31 January 2027, every client on the launch offer keeps uncapped usage at the current price. This includes clients you switch AI Assist on for between now and then.
From 1 February 2027:
Licences: each client with AI Assist needs a licence size, and each size includes a set number of credits per month
Credits: a client's credits are shared across AI Assist, Line Item Extraction, and Vault's AI features
Recommendations: Dext recommends a licence size for each client, based on their usage
You can keep the recommended licence, upgrade it, or switch AI Assist off for that client.
AI Assist licence sizes and prices
Each AI Assist licence size includes a monthly credit allowance and is charged per client, per month:
Licence size | Credits per month | UK | Europe | Canada | USA | Australia | South Africa |
Small | 10,000 | £5 | €6 | C$10 | US$7 | A$10 | R111 |
Medium | 20,000 | £10 | €12 | C$20 | US$14 | A$20 | R222 |
Large | 30,000 | £15 | €18 | C$30 | US$21 | A$30 | R333 |
There's no upper limit for clients who need more than a Large licence. Above Large, each extra 10,000 credits per month costs £5, €6, C$10, US$7, A$10 or R111. For example, a licence with 40,000 credits costs £20, €24, C$40, US$28, A$40 or R444 per month.
What uses AI Assist credits
AI Assist credits are used each time Dext creates or applies a suggestion, or extracts line items for a client with AI Assist. These are the credits each action uses:
Action | Credits used |
AI Assist creates a suggestion | 5 |
A suggestion is applied, manually or with Auto-apply | 25 |
Line Item Extraction on a document | 300 |
A Vault document summary | 40 |
AI Assist creates guidance | 0 |
A suggestion from Core guidance | 0 |
A suggestion that's created and then applied uses 30 credits in total. With Auto-apply on, every suggestion is applied straight away, so each one uses 30 credits. A suggestion that's never applied uses 5 credits.
As an example, 10,000 credits would give you roughly 310 AI Assist suggestions, or 33 line-item documents, or 250 Vault summaries in a month.
How Dext calculates a client's usage
Dext calculates each client's AI Assist usage as a monthly average over the last 6 months. It adds up the credits the client used in the current month and the 5 months before it, then divides the total by 6.
For example, if a client used 18,000 credits across the last 6 months, their monthly average is 3,000 credits. That fits within a Small licence.
Averaging over 6 months means a single busy month doesn't push a client onto a bigger licence on its own.
Check a client's credit usage and recommended licence
You can check each client's AI Assist credit usage and recommended licence from the AI Assist page. Only Practice Admins can see AI Assist usage, and your clients can't see it.
Go to AI Assist in the sidebar menu, under Clients.
Select Usage. The AI Credits used column shows each client's monthly average.
Select Manage next to a client, then select Check usage.
The client's usage opens, showing their credits used, suggestions applied, time saved, and Recommended licence. The Credits used each month chart shows each month's credits against the monthly average. Select Breakdown to split each month into suggestions generated, manually applied, and auto-applied.
Line Item Extraction and AI Assist from February 2027
From 1 February 2027, Line Item Extraction for a client with AI Assist uses that client's AI Assist credits. It works differently depending on whether the client has AI Assist:
Clients with AI Assist: Line Item Extraction uses 300 credits per document from the client's AI Assist licence. You can't use a Line Item Extraction bundle or pay as you go for these clients.
Clients without AI Assist: nothing changes. You can keep using Line Item Extraction on a pay-as-you-go basis or with a Line Item Extraction bundle.
A Line Item Extraction bundle already on your subscription stays in place, and you can use it for any client who doesn't have AI Assist. For how Line Item Extraction works, go to How to use Line Item Extraction in Dext
