Dext AI Assist is your intelligent bookkeeping agent. It learns how you and your team work, applying that knowledge to automate repetitive tasks with accuracy, transparency, and control.
It helps you save time on manual edits - like categorising receipts, reclassifying invoices, or updating fields - so you can focus on higher-value work.
Note: During the free trial, you can enable Dext AI Assist for any client who hasn't previously used it. Each client is limited to 50 applied suggestions.
What can Dext AI Assist do?
Dext AI Assist enhances Dext's automation by learning your unique bookkeeping patterns. It works directly within your Costs and Sales items by:
Suggesting values for fields like category, tax, and description
Applying context from document content and past decisions
Explaining why each suggestion was made
Letting you accept, dismiss, or automate actions
Over time, it learns from your decisions and corrections to improve accuracy and consistency.
Examples of what it can automate:
Category preferences: Recognises how you categorise different types of purchases from certain suppliers (e.g., you buy fuel from Shell → "Fuel & Oil", you buy coffee from Shell → "Operating Expenses").
Description preferences: Generates the description content you want to see, pulling in details you care about most - such as what was purchased, where it was bought, or due dates.
New suppliers: When a new supplier is added, the agent uses your past judgments to give a high-quality suggestion with a clear explanation, rather than waiting for a rule or manual coding.
Client nuance: Understands that the same supplier may be treated differently per client.
Flag items: Flags items that need your attention - whether they relate to personal expenses, motor vehicles, VAT claims, or anything else you're concerned might slip under the radar.
Email content: When documents are submitted via Extract by email, reads the email body and uses the information to suggest or auto-apply field values based on your guidance. For more, go to Dext AI Assist: Account guidance.
Line item support
Line item support lets AI Assist create, update, group, and split line items on your Costs and Sales documents.
With line item support, you can write guidance to:
Create line items based on conditions in the document - for example, adding a new line item with a specific tax type when certain criteria are met on an invoice.
Update existing line items - automatically set the description, amount, tax, quantity, category, customer, project, property, or income source per line.
Group or split line items - merge lines that match certain criteria into one, or split a single line into multiple lines.
Write guidance for line item scenarios in the same place as your other AI Assist guidance: go to Business settings > AI Assist and select Create guidance or Edit an existing guidance item. For more, go to Dext AI Assist: Account guidance.
When AI Assist has line item suggestions, a notification appears in the LINE ITEMS section of the item details page. Select Review to open the Line items - suggested changes panel, where you can Accept changes to apply all suggestions, or Dismiss to reject them and optionally provide feedback.
As with other guidance, you can set each rule to Manual review - so AI Assist recommends suggestions for you to accept or dismiss - or Auto-apply, so suggestions are applied automatically.
Important: Line item support requires Line Item Extraction (LIX), whether free allowance or a fixed bundle. If you don't yet have LIX, go to Subscription to add a LIX bundle. Prepaid bundles include a set number of monthly credits at a discounted rate. For more information, go to How to use Line Item Extraction in Dext.
How suggestions appear
Dext AI Assist suggestions appear directly on the Item details page for both Costs and Sales items. Suggestions are displayed beneath the relevant field or directly applied if Auto-apply was selected for the guidance.
A ✨ sparkle icon indicates that the value comes from the agent.
Hover over the suggestion to view the full explanation and the guidance used to generate it.
You can accept or dismiss suggestions at any time. Dismissing a suggestion allows you to provide feedback, which is used directly for future improvements.
