2-Factor Authentication (2FA) provides an extra layer of security when you log in to your Dext Prepare account and ensures that you’re the only person who can access your account, even if someone else knows your password.
2-factor authentication may also be referred to as Multi Factor Authentication.
Important: From the 14th of October all Dext users with accounts integrated with Xero will be required to use 2FA. 2FA will eventually be rolled out for all Dest users. Once 2FA is activated in an account after this date it will not be possible to disable it.

What is 2-Factor Authentication?
2FA gives you additional account security by requiring each user to provide a security code during login, in addition to your username and password.
All Dext users currently have the ability to set up 2FA for their individual user login. Once enabled, it requires a one time password (OTP) via an authenticator app to login to the Dext web app.
You can use any popular authenticator app to generate the codes, such as Google authenticator, Authy, Twilio or Microsoft Authenticator.
If you cannot use your mobile for authentication you can instead use a desktop tool such as Authy’s desktop authenticator.
Turning on 2-Factor Authentication
To turn on 2FA:
- Go to the Manage profile icon in the top right of the screen, then go to Security.

- On the Security page, under IMPROVE SECURITY click Enable.

- Read through the summary of 2-factor authentication, then click Get Started.

- Enter your current password, then click Next.

- For the next step you will need to use an authenticator app, see examples listed above.
When your authenticator app is ready, scan the QR code using your authenticator app, or use the ‘Enter Manually‘ menu to type the 16-digit code into your authenticator app.

- Copy the 6-digit code from your authenticator app into the setup screen on Dext Prepare. Click Next.

- Next, you’ll be shown a number of backup codes. Copy these and keep them safe.
Important: You should only use these to log in to Dext Prepare if you don’t have your phone and cannot access the authenticator app. After you use a backup code once, you won’t be able to use it again.

- Tick the I have stored these backup codes somewhere safe box, then click Enable 2-factor authentication. The setup is now complete!
How to Log In with 2-Factor Authentication
When 2FA is activated, anyone trying to log in to your Dext Prepare account will need:
- Your username and password
- A security code from an app on your phone, such as Google Authenticator, Authy, Microsoft Authenticator or any other free authenticator apps.
To log in:
- Go to the Dext Prepare web or mobile app and enter your email address and password and click Log in.

- After you’ve entered your username and password to log in to Dext Prepare, you’ll be asked to enter a verification code.

- Open the authenticator app on your mobile phone and find the code provided for your Dext account. Return to the Dext app and enter the code.
- After you’ve typed in your Authentication code, you can select Don’t ask me for the code for 7 days if desired. This will keep your account authenticated for the next 7 days. You won’t need to enter a new code, even if you sign in to Dext Prepare from a different device or browser.
- When ready click Verify.
Deactivating 2-Factor Authentication
If you wish to deactivate 2-factor authentication:
- Return to the Manage profile icon in the top right of the screen, then go to Security.
