How to use camera shot suggestions and auto-snap in the Dext app

Camera shot suggestions find your document, crop it and warn about blur. Auto-snap takes the photo for you.

Written by Alexander

Camera shot suggestions help you take clear, well-framed photos of receipts and invoices in the Dext mobile app. When the setting is on, the camera can:

  • Find the document in view

  • Suggest a crop, so only the document is captured

  • Take the photo for you when the document is in view (auto-snap)

  • Warn you if a photo looks blurry

Turn camera shot suggestions on or off

To turn camera shot suggestions on or off in the Dext mobile app:

  1. Go to More > Settings.

  2. Turn Camera shot suggestions on or off.

More tab with the Settings section open and the Camera shot suggestions toggle highlighted and turned on

You can change this at any time. The auto-snap button and document detection only appear in the camera while this setting is on.

How document detection works

When camera shot suggestions are on and you open the camera, the app looks for a document in view. An outline appears around the document when the app finds it.

With auto-snap off, a crop button appears at the bottom right of the camera. Tap it to crop the photo to the document's edges, then take the photo yourself. This removes the desk or table behind the document, which helps Dext read it.

Let the camera take the photo with auto-snap

Auto-snap lets the camera take the photo for you once it finds your document. To turn it on or off, tap the AI auto-detect and auto-snap button at the top of the camera. The button shows "AI" when auto-snap is on, and a hand when it's off.

With auto-snap on:

  1. Hold your phone over the document.

  2. Wait until the outline locks on. The outline changes colour when this happens.

The app then crops the photo and takes it by itself.

Note: Auto-snap isn't available in Combine mode, so the button doesn't appear there. Use Single or Multiple mode instead.

Blur warnings on the Review screen

If a photo looks blurry, the Dext mobile app warns you on the Review screen with one of these messages:

  • "This image looks blurry", with a Retake button

  • "Some of the images might be blurry", with a Review button

You can then tap Retake to take a clearer photo, or submit the photo anyway. A clear photo helps Dext extract the right details.

When to turn camera shot suggestions off

Most people get better photos with camera shot suggestions on. You might turn it off if:

  • You prefer to crop every photo yourself

  • You're capturing documents that the app doesn't detect well

Turning camera shot suggestions off also removes auto-snap and the crop button from the camera.
