The Activity insight gives you a practice-level view of transaction activity across all your clients. It shows monthly transaction counts for Revenue, Sales, Bills, Credit Notes, Manual Journals, and Bank Transactions, with month-on-month (MoM) and year-on-year (YoY) comparisons so you can see which clients are under- or over-performing.
To access it, select Insights in the left navigation, then select Activity.
Note: This article covers the Activity insight at the practice level. For the client-level equivalent, check Using the Activity Stats insight.
Who can use this insight
The Activity insight is available on the Practice Advanced plan with the Data Health & Insights add-on. Admin users see all clients by default. Standard users see only the clients they've been granted access to. For more details, check Roles and permissions in Dext.
How the data is structured
The Activity insight defaults to data from the last complete month and works backwards from there. The reporting period can't be customised.
The key at the top of the page shows the colour coding used throughout: MoM (Month-on-Month) and YoY (Year-on-Year) changes are highlighted in colour to make trends easy to spot at a glance.
Each row is a client. Columns are organised into the following groups:
General — Client Name, Last Sync, Health Score, Account Assignee, Account Reviewer, Tags
Annual — annual period, Revenue (Total and YoY), Sales, Bills, Credit Notes, Manual Journals, Bank Transactions, and Annual Total, each with a YoY comparison
Average — average monthly figures for the last 12 months for the same transaction types, each with a YoY comparison
Month 1–12 — one column group per month, each showing Revenue, Sales, Bills, Credit Notes, Manual Journals, Bank Transactions, and Total, with MoM and YoY comparisons
Account Assignee and Account Reviewer are assigned from the client list. For instructions, see Managing a colleague's access to clients.
Configuring the table
The Activity insight has the same spreadsheet-like functionality as the Practice insight. You can customise it to show exactly what you need.
Columns — select the three-dot menu at the top of any column to sort, pin, autosize, group by, or reset columns. Select Choose Columns to show or hide specific columns. A common approach is to show only the General, Annual, and Average groups and hide the individual monthly columns, unless you need a month-by-month breakdown.
Filters — each column has a filter icon for filtering by that column's values. For example, filter by Tags to view activity for a specific group of clients — useful for pricing reviews where clients are tagged by transaction volume tier.
Row groups — drag any column into the grouping area at the top of the table to group rows by that value.
Saving and exporting
To save your current table configuration, select Save. Give the report a name and choose whether to keep it private or share it with your team. Saved reports appear under Custom in the Insights navigation.
To export the current view, select Export. The table downloads as an Excel file.
