How to manage categories in Dext Solo

Manage the categories list for your Solo clients in Dext, including adding, editing, removing, and importing categories via CSV.

Categories in Dext Solo are mapped to tax return boxes and used to classify your client's income and expenses in reports. Each Solo client has a default category list based on their income source type - Self Employment or UK Property. You can add, edit, remove, and import categories to suit each client's needs.

Note: Editing a category updates all existing items using it, including how they appear in reports. System categories can't be edited or removed - these show greyed out Edit and Remove buttons. To remove a category that has items allocated to it, you'll need to recategorise those items first.

View a client's categories

To view and manage categories, open your Solo client's account and go to Business settings, then Lists, then Categories.

The categories list is tabbed by income source type. Select Self Employment or UK Property to view and manage that client's categories for each type.

Self Employment categories include a Tax return box and Disallowable % column.

UK Property categories include a Tax return box column only.

Add a category

To add a category, go to Categories and select the relevant income source tab.

  1. Select Add category.

  2. Enter a name in the Name field.

  3. Select a Tax return box from the dropdown.

  4. For Self Employment categories, enter a Disallowable % if applicable.

  5. Select Save.

Edit a category

To edit a category, select Edit next to the category you want to update. Make your changes and select Save.

Remove a category

To remove a category, select Remove next to the category you want to delete.

If a category has items allocated to it, the Remove button is disabled. You'll need to recategorise those items before you can remove it.

Import categories from CSV

You can bulk import categories using a CSV file. The required CSV format differs by income source type - Self Employment requires Category name, Tax return box, and Disallowable percentage columns; UK Property requires Category name and Tax return box only. The expected format is shown in the upload modal.

To import categories:

  1. Go to Categories and select the relevant income source tab.

  2. Select Import Self Employment CSV or Import UK Property CSV.

  3. Review the expected CSV format shown in the modal.

  4. Select Select file and choose your CSV file.

CSV files only, 2MB maximum.
