Connecting your HMRC Agent Account to Dext gives your practice access to MTD VAT data for all clients you manage through that account. This powers the MTD for VAT insight, the HMRC VAT section of the Deadlines insight, and the Estimated VAT and HMRC Status checks within the VAT return checks.
Important: This connection is separate from the HMRC connection used by Dext Solo for MTD for Income Tax. For that, go to How to connect Dext to HMRC for MTD for Income Tax.
Who can set this up
Only Practice Admins can access the Integrations page in Practice settings. The HMRC connection is available to UK practices only — go to Practice settings > Practice profile and confirm that Country of registration is set to United Kingdom before continuing.
Dext can only retrieve data for clients managed under your HMRC Agent Account. Clients who manage their own HMRC account directly aren't included.
Connecting to HMRC
To connect your HMRC Agent Account to Dext:
Go to Practice settings and select Integrations in the left navigation.
Select the HMRC (UK Only) section to expand it.
Select Connect to HMRC.
You'll be redirected to the HMRC GOV.UK authorisation page. Follow the steps to grant Dext access to your VAT information.
Once connected, the status shown in the HMRC section updates to Connected.
After connecting
Once the connection is in place, your clients' VAT data won't appear immediately. Dext needs to sync each client before it can pull their HMRC data. This happens automatically within 24 hours, or you can trigger a manual sync for each client if you need the data sooner.
