Dextension is a browser extension that adds features across Dext and Xero. This article covers what it lets you do and how to install and configure it.
Note: Dextension is currently only available on Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge.
What you can do from anywhere in your browser
Dextension adds two upload options that work on any page in your browser, regardless of which site you're on.
Upload items with drag and drop
To upload a file using drag and drop, drag it into the Dextension upload dialog. The current upload destination is shown at the bottom of the dialog.
To set the upload location before dragging a file in, select Change at the bottom of the dialog. In the form that appears, set the Organisation, Account, Document Owner, and Bank Account, then select Save.
If you're already dragging a file and want to change the destination first, drag it onto the Change button. This opens the location form so you can update the details before the file is uploaded.
Upload items via context menu
To upload a file using the context menu, right-select it in your browser and hover over Upload to Dext. Select the destination - Costs, Sales, Supplier Statements, or Bank - from the submenu that appears.
Important: To use this feature, you must allow Dextension access to file URLs.
What you can do in Dext
Dextension adds one feature to the item details page in Dext.
View previous codings
To see how previous transactions from a supplier have been coded in Xero, select View previous codings under the category field on the item details page. Select your chosen category from the list that appears.
What you can do on the Xero invoice page
Dextension adds two features to the Xero invoice page.
Show the attachment
To view an invoice and its attachment side by side, open the invoice in Xero. Dextension displays the attached document alongside the invoice details, so you can check the amount, VAT code, and category without switching between screens.
Pre-populate the reference
When you open an invoice in Xero, Dextension automatically fills in the reference field in the Make a payment for section with the invoice reference.
What you can do in the Xero client dashboard
Dextension adds two features to the Xero client dashboard.
Dext warning triangles
Dextension displays warning triangles in the Xero client dashboard when there's data in Dext that hasn't been published to Xero yet. Select a warning triangle to go directly to the relevant page in Dext.
Warning triangles appear for:
Invoices owed to you: the number and value of items in the Sales workspace in Dext
Bills you need to pay: the number and value of items in the Costs workspace in Dext
Health Score and Client tags
Dextension surfaces the Data Health & Insights Health Score and Client tags in the Xero client dashboard. The Health Score signals the quality of data in your ledger.
Client tags identify the groups or cohorts you've assigned to this client in Data Health & Insights.
Select Health Score to go directly to Data Health & Insights.
What you can do on the Xero bank reconciliation screen
Dextension adds several features to the Xero bank reconciliation screen to help you work through transactions faster.
Show item image on hover
To preview an item's attachment without opening it, hover over the attachment icon on the bank reconciliation screen. Dextension displays the item image directly in the reconciliation view, saving you clicks when reviewing matched items.
Display supplier statements
For each bank transaction, Dextension checks for a statement or remittance in Dext that matches the date, amount, and supplier name. If it finds a match, it displays a paperclip icon so you can view it directly from the reconciliation screen.
Show tracking categories
Dextension adds tracking category information to each matched transaction in the bank reconciliation screen. This gives you the context you need to reconcile with confidence without opening items separately.
Make the 'More details' pop-up movable
When you select More details on a bank transaction, the pop-up can obscure key information on the screen. Dextension makes the pop-up draggable so you can reposition it and see everything you need in one view.
Order matched transactions first
By default, Xero orders bank transactions by date, which scatters matched transactions throughout the page. Dextension moves matched transactions to the top of the list so you can review and reconcile them first.
Quickly create a receipt from the Xero ledger
To create a receipt directly from the Xero ledger, Dextension pre-fills the Why field in the Create form with the bank transaction description, so you don't have to type it manually.
Automate comments on bank transactions
To add a saved comment to a bank transaction, go to the Discuss tab, type ".", and select the comment you want to add from the list.
Expand the transaction description
When a bank transaction description is cut off in the reconciliation view, Dextension lets you expand it to read the full text. This makes it easier to reconcile complex payments with confidence.
Send paperwork requests
To request outstanding paperwork from a client, select Paperwork requests at the top of the Xero bank reconciliation page. From there, you can:
List unreconciled transactions (paid or received) with their dates, values, and any Xero discuss notes
Send a customisable request by email via Gmail or Outlook
Download a CSV of your selection
Send a notification to the client via the Dext mobile app
The recipient gets a precise list of what's needed and a link to the Dext web or mobile app to take action.
